Bob Diamond is back. The former Barclays chief executive has returned to the City of London with something of a whimper, teaming up with a Qatari investment bank to acquire Panmure Gordon, a stockbroker with a famous name that has fallen on hard times.
The deal, which was announced on Friday morning, is designed to reinvigorate the 142-year-old Panmure name by removing the short-term pressures of a public listing while expanding the business beyond the increasingly squeezed world of small-cap equities.
