China logs 30 per cent rise in reported sexual assaults on children

The Chinese mainland publicly reported 433 cases of sexual assault on children in 2016, an annual increase of 30 per cent, with the majority occurring in rural areas, according to a non-governmental organisation report published on Thursday.

The Beijing-based Girls’ Protection Foundation compiled its fourth annual child sexual assault report based on media reports and cases disclosed by courts and procuratorates. It warned that the number of assaults could be much higher, as most were not reported.

Last year saw the second highest record in the past four years, with the highest in 2015, when 503 cases were reported.
